Peruvian limón (Limon Peruano) is one of the key ingredients in Peruvian cuisine. It is used both in food and drinks. Residents of Peru are so addicted to this lemon that they cannot imagine their lives without it. All Peruvians who I know and who live outside the country I ask one question : What do you miss the most from Peru? The most common answer- Limón! To be honest not only Peruvians value this special lemon. Last year it was determined that this product is positioned as one of the most requested foods abroad for its unique flavor and acidity, especially in cuisine. But there are also ways this lemon is used in Peru. Namely it is used in natural medicine. Yes, yes! Peruvian lemon not only has a great taste, but also has healthy properties. For example, it is a good astringent for the skin, to reduce open pores. It is also good for removing odors and helps to clear skin spots. In addition, with a little honey, it helps to soothe sore throats.
Peruvian limón in food
This lemon is used to cook the raw fish in Peru’s national and very famous dish called Ceviche. When I first tried this dish, I could not believe that it is only made with lemon. The taste is more than incredible and when you start to realize that it is all thanks to this small, green ingredient, it becomes even more awesome!
Ceviche is not the only dish to which Peruvians use their unique lemon!
Actually Peruvian Limón is a component of numerous salsas and gives exceptional flavor to many typical dishes. Peruvians can’t imagine eating a meal without this small green ingredient. They add it to almost everything such as soups as well as to different kind of main courses. The first thing served in restaurants is always lemon and some sauces, including spicy.
I have also gotten used to using it while cooking. It is now one of the main products I have in my kitchen. It also helps me to avoid eating too much salt! This small lemon is great for this kind of replacement.
The easiest salad ever with Peruvian Limón
Peruvian lemon is also perfect for all kinds of salads. My favorite one discovered in Peru is an onion salad. Very healthy and extremely easy to prepare. To make it you need only 2 ingredients: onion (the red one) and Peruvian Limón. Try it! You will be surprised at how delicious it can be. I have never eaten crude onion before. For long time I even did not want to try this salad. Finally when I broke myself, I fell in love with it and now I prepare it almost every day!
Peruvian Limón in drinks
This magical small Limón is also a main ingredient in Peru’s national drink Pisco Sour. The simplest version of this delicious drink consists of Pisco (kind of vodka), egg white, honey, and Limón. The taste, like all things that contain the Peruvian lemon, is perfect.
