If you are an adventurer and dream of an active holiday with lots of opportunities for trekking whilst admiring stunning scenery en route, this tour is for you. Learn about Peru, the Inca Empire, the diverse culture and ancient traditions as well as visiting the infamous Inca ruins - Machu Picchu.
The first day arriving in Cusco we have a light schedule so as to acclimatize to the high altitude (around 3 400 m.a.s.l.). Depending on the arrival time, we will visit the ruins of Saqsaywaman, the museum of Koricancha and attend a cooking class. Here you will learn how to prepare typical Peruvian dishes and the famous beverage Pisco Sour.
The Sacred Valley, also known as the Valley of Urubamba, is unique. It offers not only breathtaking landscapes, but Peruvians believe it is full of positive energy. Here is where you find ruins from the Inca Empire, which are viewed as the most important and strategic in the entire region and also the country. You can spend many days discovering new entities in this part of the Cusco region. There are two important and beautiful towns in the Sacred Valley which we will see and explore – Ollantaytambo and Pisac.
During the second day you will have a chance to discover the first of them – Ollantaytambo. It is a cosy and inviting town.
We will start the day early in the morning, around 7:00am. First, you will visit the Inca ruins situated in town. After that we will go by car to Patacancha Valley. This valley is famous for producing textiles locally made in the traditional way. During the tour you will meet local communities and learn about the production of textiles and handicrafts in the region. Afterwards we continue by car to the ruins at Puma Marka and from here we will descend through the valley, through stunning scenery back to Ollantaytambo (around 3 hours of hiking), arriving around 6:00pm.
This mini adventure tour offers you adrenaline loaded opportunities. You will not have a chance to get bored! You will start the tour at an altitude of more than 4 300 m.a.s.l., where you will mountain bike downhill to the jungle at an altitude of 1 200 m.a.s.l. After which you will have a chance to test your skills in rafting (optional) and then hike to the rustic lodge, where we stay the night, surrounded by coffee plantations, hidden in the jungle, finishing at an altitude of 1 500 m.a.s.l. During the second day you will follow original Inca paths, finishing the day with a warm bath in the hot springs near the small town of Santa Teresa. On the third day you have the option to take part in zip lining (optional) and trekking to Aguas Calientes.
The fourth day will be spent in one of the new 7 wonders of the world – Machu Picchu, situated on top of the hillside, surrounded by the mountains and jungle. You will have the opportunity to explore this incredible site from the early morning until 5pm (closing time). You will return late to Cusco about 1:00am.
We will start the tour early around 6:30am. Around 7:30am we will reach the ruins of Chinchero, have an explore and afterwards have a lesson about the local textiles of the region.
After Chinchero, you will explore the archaeological site of Moray, containing unusual Inca ruins, consisting of several enormous terraced circular depressions. We will travel to the ruins by bike (this will take around 3-4 hours).
From Moray we continue to the next destination – Maras, by bike (optional by car). We will take a short pause in the small town of Maras and learn about the production of the popular Andean beverage, chicha de jora (corn beer).
Salineras de Maras
After Maras we continue the biking tour (optional trekking) towards the incredible salt ponds, Salineras de Maras, that are still in use and have been since the Inca times. Here you will have a chance to walk through more than 5000 salt ponds and learn about the production of salt.
We will finish the tour and return to Cusco around 6pm.
During this short tour you will have the opportunity to soak up wonderful Andean landscapes. You will reach almost 5000 m.a.s.l., as you pass through small villages high up in the mountains. You also have the opportunity to learn about the life of llamas and alpacas whose herds we meet along the way. At the end of the trek you can reward yourself with a bath in the nearby hot springs whilst admiring the view of Ausangate summit – fifth highest mountain in Peru. Depending on your flight schedule you may have some additional hours to enjoy Cusco city, which could include visiting the famous San Pedro Market (Mercado San Pedro) or Museums, as well as a chocolate and coffee tour – at Choco Museo (Chocolate Museum), where you can learn about the world renowned Peruvian chocolate and coffee.
If you have a flight late in the afternoon, there is the option of organising a half-day tour to some local communities outside the city or to other archaeological sites that are of interest you.
